Castaing’s instability in a trapped ultra-cold gas

چکیده

We consider a trapped ultra-cold gas of (non-condensed) bosons with two internal states (described by a pseudo spin) and study the stability of a longitudinal pseudo spin polarization gradient. For this purpose, we numerically solve a kinetic equation corresponding to a situation close to the experiment at JILA [1]. It shows the presence of Castaing’s instability of transverse spin polarization fluctuations at long wavelengths. This phenomenon could be used to create spontaneous transverse spin waves. Classical region of a trapped Bose gas

The classical region of a Bose gas consists of all single particle modes that have a high average occupation and are well described by a classical field. Highly occupied modes only occur in massive Bose gases at ultra-cold temperatures, in contrast to the photon case where there are highly occupied modes at all temperatures. For the Bose gas the number of these modes is dependent on the tempera...

Statistics of work and orthogonality catastrophe in discrete level systems: an application to fullerene molecules and ultra-cold trapped Fermi gases

The sudden introduction of a local impurity in a Fermi sea leads to an anomalous disturbance of its quantum state that represents a local quench, leaving the system out of equilibrium and giving rise to the Anderson orthogonality catastrophe. The statistics of the work done describe the energy fluctuations produced by the quench, providing an accurate and detailed insight into the fundamental p...

Dipolar Relaxation in an ultra-cold Gas of magnetically trapped chromium atoms

We have investigated both theoretically and experimentally dipolar relaxation in a gas of magnetically trapped chromium atoms. We have found that the large magnetic moment of 6μB results in an event rate coefficient for dipolar relaxation processes of up to 3.2 · 10−11 cm3s−1 at a magnetic field of 44G. We present a theoretical model based on pure dipolar coupling, which predicts dipolar relaxa...

Surface-atom force out of thermal equilibrium and its effect on ultra-cold atoms

The surface-atom Casimir-Polder-Lifshitz force out of thermal equilibrium is investigated in the framework of macroscopic electrodynamics. Particular attention is devoted to its large distance limit that shows a new, stronger behaviour with respect to the equilibrium case. The frequency shift produced by the surface-atom force on the the center-of-mass oscillations of a harmonically trapped Bos...
